Nuer Community factions in Egypt reconcile ahead of December 15

Two factions of South Sudan's Nuer Community in the Arab Republic of Egypt have reconciled this week after a disagreements over community leadership's components sparked a three-year-old standoff.

JUBA – Two factions of South Sudan’s Nuer Community in the Arab Republic of Egypt have reconciled this week after a disagreements over community leadership’s components sparked a three-year-old standoff.

In 2018, Nuer community in Egypt split into two. One group says the Nuer Community leadership should be composed of six sub-communities: Greater Bentiu, Greater Lou-Nuer, Greater Fangak, Gajaak, Nasir, and Ulang.

The other insists that the Nuer Community is usually composed of Greater Bentiu, Greater Nasir, Greater Akobo, and Greater Fangak.

In a ceremony Friday, the community factions agreed to come together under one umbrella that would compose of Bentiu, Eastern Jikany, Lou-Nuer, and Fangak.

Speaking during the reunification ceremony at a church in downtown Cairo last week, South Sudan ambassador to the Arab Republic of Egypt, Joseph Muom Majak, urged the community members to forget the past and open a new page of peace and harmony.

“I urges you to reconcile because unity among the Nuer community is unity among the different South Sudanese communities and this is important for peace and unity back in our country,” Amb. Muom said.

For his part, newly-elected chairman of Nuer community Lam Thiyang vowed to make his best in reuniting fully the community and to also reach out to all who have been kept apart by the disagreement.

Newly-elected chairman of Nuer Community Association ink Egypt, Kom Simon Manyrop said he will work with his chairman to  reunited the Nuer community in Egypt and also thanked the reconciliation team which made the reunification possible.
