CAIRO – The Nuer Community in Egypt, forming a significant South Sudanese diaspora group, has elected Ruai Thak Zoar as their new leader, succeeding Lam Keah Thiyang who held the position for four years.
Ruai was elected unopposed in Wednesday’s election. In his post-election statement, he expressed deep gratitude to the Nuer Community for their support and pledged to fulfill his campaign promises.
“I express my utmost gratitude to the Nuer community in Egypt for your contributions to the general election and peaceful power transfer. My heart is filled with gratitude for the trust, support, and love shown by the community,” Ruai stated.
He also extended thanks to various leaders and associations within the community.
“To all Nuer Greater leaders, sub-community leaders, student leaders, and women association leaders, thank you for your belief and trust. To those who volunteered, made calls, knocked on doors, and contributed in various ways, your efforts are greatly appreciated,” he added.
Addressing the community, Ruai assured them of his commitment to their welfare.
“Nuer elders, local judges, pastors, mothers, fathers, and youth in Egypt, you have placed your trust in me and the elected leaders. We will work diligently on your behalf and deliver for our constituency,” he concluded.
Gatbel Maguon Machar was elected as the chair of the council, with Gai David as the new secretary-general.
Chol Gatkuoth Chuong was elected as the chairperson of Nuer Community Women in Egypt.
Separately, the Bentiu Community in Egypt elected Puot Mayiek as their chairman on Friday, with Ran Yoak Dayiem elected as secretary-general. Puot pledged to initiate reforms, including opening an Adult Education Centre and helping women reestablish their association.
“We are committed to bringing meaningful changes that will benefit our community, especially in education and women’s empowerment,” said Puot.
The Nuer community in Egypt forms a significant number of South Sudanese refugees and people displaced by the war in South Sudan that broke out in December 2013.
This number has increased following the outbreak of war in Sudan in April 2024.
