Police spokesman Major Elijah Mabor Makuac said the incident was reported on Thursday at around 7:00 PM when unidentified armed men came and attacked people in the area.
One person was killed, and another was shot and wounded and is currently in Rumbek State Hospital.
He said, according to some information, the attackers are suspected to be from the same community of Pakam, specifically the Niel-niel section, and the attack is believed to be a revenge attack.
“So, up to now, we are still investigating the issue to identify the perpetrators who attacked people. Even if we were informed that these people who became victims were not the target, there were other young men who actually entered that house. People doubt maybe they were the ones who had been followed somewhere there,” he told Sudans Post on Sunday.
“But what happened was they entered someone’s house, and they sat hiding beside the wall, and those who became victims were just sitting in an open area. Immediately, the attackers came and they opened fire on these people who were sitting in an open area within the fence and they fled away. So, after the incident, the police rushed to the scene, and they evacuated the victims and they tried to search around but they failed to catch them. They were actually taken to Rumbek State Hospital, and the investigation is still going on to identify who the attackers are,” he added.
Daniel Laat Kon, a civil society activist in Lakes State, said, “I want to comment on the incident whereby somebody was shot dead, and we also heard about an incident in Cueibet County where one person was killed using a spear.”
He said looking at all these incidents shows that the peace and tranquility we have been having in Lakes State is coming back towards these indicators that people are getting back into conflicts.
“When you look at those incidents like the incident that happened in Maborngap, all these incidents are the ones that cause revenge killings. Because if someone is killed and there’s no any response from the government, then there will be a revenge killing from the family of the deceased and then the conflicts erupted there” he said.
“We also always call on the State government to strengthen security and they should come up with other mechanisms of patrolling the town,” he added.
He said there is no government patrol now in the residential areas, and that it is only in Rumbek market where you see police and national security securing the town.
“But when you go to residential areas in Maborngap, Akuac, and Deng-nhial, they are not free now for citizens to live in. There is a need for more protection to beef up security, and there is a need for patrolling in the evening and also at night. The government should embark on disarming the civil population because there is rearmament when you go to the cattle camps and go to the villages,” he said.
“You see many people are carrying arms, and these are all indicators that we as citizens are not safe in Lakes State, and the peace that we have been enjoying for some time now is getting back to worse. This is our concern as CEPO coordinator on all these incidents,” he said.
