JUBA – About 10,000 households on Friday received food assistance from the UN World Food Programme (WFP) in Aweil South of Northern Bahr el Ghazal.

Dut Majokdit, chairperson of Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) in Northern Bahr el Ghazal, said each household received 50 kgs of sorghum.

“The food item was sorghum and each household received 50 kgs and other items such as salt and oil will be given to them in form of cash,” Majakdit told Sudans Post reporter in an interview on Monday.

Majakdit said the food package will ease the hunger crisis in the state.

“Two days ago I was in Aweil South and I witnessed the distribution in Aweil South. The WFP has released food to curb hunger and 10,000 households have been targeted in Aweil South and have received food,” said Majakdit.

Majakdit appreciated the UN WFP for providing food aid to the vulnerable communities in the state.

“We appreciate the WFP for the effort and we hope that they will continue to support our people in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State,” he said.

He said the food distribution will continue for two months in three counties of Aweil.

“We look forward to seeing the distribution of food aid in Aweil West resume this week and next week will be for Awei North.”

He said the beneficiaries include women, elderly people, and people with disabilities, among others.

“These vulnerable people were targeted in April and March, they are vulnerable people.  Those who are blind (visually impaired Persons) disable persons and those who can’t afford to bring food on the table.”
