JUBA – At least 2,502 houses were destroyed and 11,498 people displaced by floods in Cueibet County of Lakes State, local authorities said.
Adhum Achol Geu, Deputy Chairperson of Relief and Rehabilitation Commission in Lakes State said crops and livestock have submerged in water caused by flooding which began with the onset of the rainy season in May this year.
“Floods have hit most parts of Cueibet County of Lakes State and the total number of people affected based on an assessment that was yesterday and today (Tuesday) is 11,498 households,” Geu told Sudans Post in an interview on Tuesday.
Geu said homes, health facilities, schools, and markets have submerged, impacting people’s access to essential services.
“The total number of houses we confirmed yesterday was 2,502 to have collapsed due to heavy rain that happened in Cueibet County,” Geu said.
Geu stated that thousands of people displaced from their homes have moved to higher ground.
“They are mostly occupying schools, health facilities in those particular areas located at higher lands. This is what happened in those areas but our team and humanitarian actors are on the ground conducting assessment to see the impact of flooding.”
He said they have reported an outbreak of waterborne diseases such as malaria in areas affected by floods.
“The floods have also led to an outbreak of some diseases such as malaria. Malaria is a common disease because Cueibet hospital is overrun because of displacement that has happened.”
He said the commission has provided medicine and soaps to flood victims.
“We mobilized some resources and purchase medicines and we dispatched it to Cueibet and we also distributed some soaps and some kits for an emergency.”
He appealed to humanitarian agencies to provide food, sanitation, shelter, and medicine to flood victims.
“They also need to be provided with shelter and given foods that are currently sheltering at higher ground.”
