JUBA – A convoy of 2,000 trucks carrying food items and other merchandise to South Sudan has stranded at Elegu border of Uganda due to recent attacks targeting foreign drivers along the roads.
The trankers are a particular target and drivers fear to cross to the conflict-ridden country.
Recently, gunmen reportedly ambushed trucks on the road to the South Sudanese capital Juba and killed five foreign drivers and four others along Juba-Yei highway in separate attacks.
The attack disrupted cross-border trade among Uganda and South Sudan and Kenya.
Salwa Bakony Monytuel, Deputy Chairperson of South Sudan National Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture worried that the stand-off will lead to shortage and hike of prices of commodities in the country.
“The current stand-off of transporters at Elegu border of Uganda is of great concern to the Chamber of Commerce because it will lead to shortage of products and may hike the prices of commodities in our markets,” Bakony said during a press conference held in the organization’s premises in Juba on Monday.
Monytuel called on the government to immediately act to apprehend the culprits behind the killing.
“The Chamber condemned the killing which targeted innocent foreign traders and we urge the government to immediately act by apprehending those beyond the killing,” she expressed.
She also appealed to the government to address the insecurity along the roads to allow flow of goods into the country.
“We are calling on the government to deploy organ forces along roads in order to allow free movement of people and goods along the borders,” she said.
Yeah, the Ugandans people are scared because the rebels are targeting them for no reason. The SPLA would have not successful if they were doing such a terrorist style in Equatoria Regions. This is not only affecting country but also it is a punishment to particularly the Equatorians business people and normal citizens who are defending in markets. General Thomas Cirillo and others should be ashamed for doing such and deny it.
