According to the Jonglei State Ministry of Health, at least 2,759 cholera cases have been recorded, including 80 deaths. The first case was recorded in Pigi County.
Speaking at the launch event, Jonglei State Minister of Health Lual Monyluak Dau urged citizens to turn out in large numbers for the vaccination. He also encouraged Bor town residents to continue following preventive measures even after receiving the vaccine.
“We have to do more, and that is the reason why we put more vaccination centers in the northern and southern sides of Bor County,” Dau said. “For us to avoid this cholera, we must observe the preventive measures, and this will help us overcome this disease.”
Dau emphasized that the most affected areas in Jonglei State include Pangak and Twic East counties, adding that cases are still increasing.
Priskila Kelei, a resident of Bor who received her vaccine, said she decided to get vaccinated knowing it would help protect her from the disease that is killing hundreds of people in the country.
“I took the vaccine simply because it will protect me from this disease that is disturbing the state and other parts of the country,” Kelei said.
Kelei added that she had not experienced any side effects or complications from the vaccine, urging others to get vaccinated.
The vaccine campaign will run for seven days, from Monday through Sunday.
