Lakes State police spokesman, Maj. Elijah Mabor Makuac, confirmed the incident to Sudans Post, which occurred on Tuesday at 3:00 PM in Yirol West County.
“The public prosecutor and a warrant officer got into a dispute, leading to a fistfight, and the prosecutor was seriously injured,” Makuac said.
The prosecutor’s right arm was broken during the altercation. Makuac explained that the public prosecutor had been supervising as usual when he found someone detained without an arrest warrant.
The prosecutor directed the police officer to release the detainee or call the complainant to file a case against the accused.
“The warrant officer misunderstood the prosecutor’s directive and refused to comply. The prosecutor decided to return to his office and directed his superior to handle the matter. Before action could be taken, the prosecutor was attacked by the warrant officer while on his way to the toilet, leading to a fractured arm,” Makuac said.
People intervened, and the injured prosecutor was evacuated to a hospital. Due to the seriousness of the injury, he was later referred to Juba for further medical treatment.
The warrant officer was arrested, dismissed from the police service, and will face charges in court.
Senior legal counsel and head of legal administration in Lakes State, Philemon Alphonse Ikolli, condemned the incident, describing it as a serious violation of the law.
He emphasized that police officers must respect the powers of others and act within the law.
CEPO Coordinator Daniel Laat Kon also condemned the incident, stating that it reflects a lack of proper training and understanding of the law among police officers.
He called for improved relations between the police and prosecutors to prevent such incidents in the future.
