According to a statement from the Office of the President issued on Wednesday, the President was briefed on the final preparations ahead of the commissioning ceremony by the Minister of Transport, Rizik Zakaria Hassan, and the Director General of the South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority, Dr. Ayiei Garang Deng.
The two officials informed President Kiir that all arrangements for the official handover of the facility had been completed and that the terminal was ready to begin operations.
Minister Rizik described the new terminal as a major achievement for South Sudan’s aviation sector, highlighting the government’s continued investment in strategic infrastructure aimed at supporting economic development, facilitating trade, and improving regional and international connectivity.
“Terminal 3 represents a landmark achievement for the country’s aviation sector,” the minister said, according to the statement, adding that the facility reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen transport infrastructure and enhance service delivery.
The newly constructed terminal has been designed to handle both international arrivals and departures, expanding the airport’s capacity while introducing improved passenger facilities, faster processing systems, and enhanced service standards.
The commissioning of Terminal 3 comes as part of the government’s broader infrastructure development agenda, which seeks to modernise key national assets and position South Sudan as a competitive regional transport hub.
Juba International Airport serves as the country’s main gateway for international travel, humanitarian operations, and commercial air transport. The expansion of its facilities is expected to ease congestion, improve passenger experience, and support increased movement of people and goods.
The government has previously identified transport infrastructure development as a key priority in efforts to stimulate economic growth, attract investment, and strengthen South Sudan’s connection with neighbouring countries and the wider international community.
The official commissioning ceremony on Thursday will formally mark the completion and operational transition of Terminal 3, which authorities say will play a central role in transforming the country’s aviation landscape.
