JUBA, MARCH 1, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – Persons with disabilities on Wednesday lauded President Salva Kiir Mayardit for assenting into law the United Nations Convention on the Rights of persons with disabilities (UNCRPD).
Kiir last week signed at least four international conventions into law including the UNRPD, a move described by the local civil society watchdog Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) as a landmark decision from the presidency.
“I appreciate and thank the President for hearing our cry and for being the President for all. Now we are happy that we can be protected by international law and national law within country,” Stephen said.
Stephen said the law aims to promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of persons with disabilities.
“We will be represented in different levels of government and that our rights will be respected and access to information, education, health and to any other social services,” he said.
He called for immediate implementation of the protocol.
“Now the actual work begins, the work that we must implement provisions this convention as a country and as UN Agencies.”
“I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the government of South Sudan for assenting into the law the convention on the rights of persons with rights disabilities and it is a long awaited campaign that we started since 2017,” said Edmund Yakani, Executive Director for Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO).
“There should be no any form of discrimination, what we called zero tolerance for discrimination against persons with disabilities.”
