RUMBEK – A 30-year-old man suspected of raping a 16-year-old girl has been arrested in Cueibet County of South Sudan’s Lakes State, police authorities said on Tuesday.

Major Elijah Mabor Makuac, the Lakes State police spokesperson, told Sudans Post that the man was apprehended in the Mamer-ngap area after a month on the run.

The suspect is accused of raping a 16-year-old girl last month and fleeing the scene. He is currently in police custody in Cueibet County awaiting investigation.

Daniel Laat Kon, a civil society activist, welcomed the arrest, highlighting the government’s efforts to combat gender-based violence through the Customary Law and Public Order Act.

“Yes, there are still cases of GBV that are happening, and that’s why we have to appreciate the government currently, because there are still some people that are still being brought to book. Those who have perpetrated rape and these people need to be held accountable because,” Kon told Sudans Post.

“Whenever you have perpetrated GBV, you have to be taken to court and then you are sentenced or fined and this is where the people will see that the government is following the law that they have enacted because implementation of the law matters a lot in everything despite the law that they have passed and we don’t implement it than GBV cases will still continue,” he added.

Kon added that as a gender-based violence partner and representative of CEPO, they would continue to monitor cases to reduce gender-based violence in Lakes State.
