UDRM/A is a member of the South Sudan Opposition Movements Alliance (SSOMA) led by General Thomas Cirilo Swaka, becoming, therefore, a part of the ongoing peace talks in Italy between the Reconstituted Transitional Government of National Unity and holdout groups.
“The United Democratic Revolutionary Movement and Army, UDRM/A’s Leadership Council convened on Sunday 22nd of August, 2021 and deliberated at length on the absence of the Chairman and Commander-in- Chief, Dr. Gatwech Koang Thiech Zuor without seeking permission from Leadership Council for nearly a year since October, 2020,” Deng Vanang, the group’s Secretary-General told Sudans Post on Monday evening.
Vanang who has now been elevated to become the group’s deputy chairman said “for the most part of 2018 to the whole of 2019, Dr. Gatwech had been absent without bothering himself to seek permission from the Leadership Council of UDRM/A till he technically resurfaced in September, 2020.”
“The Leadership Council at long last reached a conclusion to remove Dr. Gatwech as Chairman and Commander-in- Chief of UDRM/A on the same day of Sunday, 22nd, 2021,” Deng added.
He said the group has promoted the deputy chairman to replace him on as the acting chairman deputized by him.
“Similarly, UDRM/A’s Leadership Council on above mentioned day and time moved further to elevate Dr. Gatwech’s Deputy and yearlong Acting Chairman and Commander-in- Chief, Thomas Tut Doap Jiek to the position of Chairman and Commander-in- Chief as per UDRM constitution, July 2020,” he said, citing article 23.5 of chapter 12 of the group’s constitution as the source of their power on the chairman’s replacement.
“On the same date and time the Secretary- General of UDRM, Cde Deng Nyang Vanang Thong is as well elevated to position of Deputy Chairman and Commander-in- Chief of the UDRM/A as per UDRM constitution, July 2020,” he added, as also citing article 23.13 of chapter 12.
“In this case, the Secretary-General is assuming the position of Deputy Chairperson currently moved to the position of the Chairperson in absentia. Soon the new Chairman and Commander-in- Chief, Thomas Tut Doap Jiek will restructure the Leadership Council as well as appointment UDRA’s Chief of General Staff in due course,” he concluded.
