KHARTUM, JUNE 15, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – Sudan’s rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Wednesday abducted the governor of the country’s restive West Darfur State, Khamis Abdullah Abakr, before killing him, sources with direct knowledge said.

“He was abducted yesterday by the Rapid Support Forces during the evening hours in Geneina. They are claiming that they did not do so, but they are the one who abducted him, not just Rezegat,” one source in Geneina told Sudans Post.

In a statement, the army condemned the governor’s killing and said the RSF is responsible for his death.

“The armed forces condemns in the strongest terms the treacherous behavior of the rebel Rapid Support Forces militia today in which it abducted and executed the governor of West Darfur Khamis Abdullah Abakr,” the army said in a statement.

“This monstrous behavior adds a new chapter to the barbaric crimes that they have been committing on the Sudanese people who have seen their crimes as never witnessed in the country’s history,” the army statement further said.

It went on to reveal that “the betrayed governor was one of the heads of armed groups signatory to the Juba Peace Agreement and he was appointed to his position based on the agreement and has no relation to the conflict between the armed forces and the rebels.”
