EL OBEID – At least 12 civilians were killed and hundreds of families displaced in an attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Khor al-Dalib in South Kordofan, the Sudan Doctors Network said in a statement.

According to the network’s spokesperson, Dr. Mohamed Faisal, RSF forces, along with fighters from the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), used heavy weaponry in residential neighborhoods, causing widespread destruction.

“Due to the use of heavy weapons by the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in the midst of residential neighborhoods,” he stated.

The attack, which took place on Monday, triggered mass displacement, with families fleeing their homes in search of safety.

The situation in South Kordofan has been deteriorating as fighting escalates between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), RSF, and allied groups.

Civilians in conflict-affected areas face increasing threats, including indiscriminate shelling, restricted humanitarian access, and forced displacement.

Human rights groups have repeatedly warned about the use of heavy artillery in populated areas, raising concerns over potential war crimes.

The latest attack in Khor al-Dalib adds to the growing humanitarian crisis in Sudan, where millions are already displaced due to the ongoing conflict that began in April 2023.

Neither the RSF nor SPLM-N immediately responded to requests for comment.
