RUMBEK – The Mayor of Rumbek Town in Lakes State Peter Maliap Chieny on Thursday met representatives of the UN mission in South Sudan over concerns about a recent road rehabilitation project and the poor quality of marram used in the construction.
According to Chieny, the meeting held with the Acting Head of UN field office, Raoul Ireng, focused on issues with the roundabouts in Rumbek Town.
The senior government official said that while UNMISS initially labeled the roads and placed marram, the quality of the material proved inadequate, causing dust and inconvenience for residents, particularly traders and businesses.
“We had a productive discussion and agreed on corrective actions. UNMISS technicians will collaborate with our engineers to assess the situation and ensure high-quality work in the future,” he said following the meeting held in Rumbek.
“UNMISS has been a valued partner to the Lakes State government since its establishment. They have consistently supported our work, and we appreciate their collaboration,” he added.
He expressed optimism that the issues would be resolved within one or two weeks, but urged residents for patience, acknowledging the complaints received at his office.
For his part, Ireng confirmed the meeting with Chieny and representatives from the Lakes State Ministry of Roads and Bridges.
“We openly discussed the concerns raised about the initial project and agreed on a path forward to address the problems,” Ireng said. “We are confident that by working together, we can achieve a better outcome.”
Malual Makoi, Acting Director-General of the Ministry of Roads and Bridges, expressed appreciation for UNMISS’s partnership and willingness to collaborate on corrective measures.
“We value UNMISS as a partner, and we acknowledge their significant contributions over the years,” Makoi said. “Together, with the expertise of our engineers and those from UNMISS, we are committed to finding a solution for Rumbek’s road maintenance needs.”
