KAMPALA – A South Sudanese national has been arrested for possessing materials used to produce counterfeit currency.
The man was arrested by Ugandan officials while crossing the Malaba one-stop border point from Kenya through Uganda to South Sudan by bus.
According to the Uganda Revenue Authority, the non-intrusive inspection (NII) scanner ‘spotted uncanny’ items in the man’s hand luggage, which prompted the immigration officials to physically inspect the bag.
URA public and cooperate affairs manager, Ian Rumanyika says they found bundles of papers in size of a dollar and some liquid among other things.
On the face value, Rumanyika says, they were just papers but upon application of a liquid chemical found in the man’s luggage, the papers transformed into fake dollars leading to his arrest.
