JUBA-The body monitoring ceasefire in South Sudan is calling on the unity government to avail necessary resources for the implementation of the peace agreement.
The government of President Salva Kiir Mayardit has been struggling to fund the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement with peace monitors reporting lack of will to implement the deal from the parties to the revitalized peace agreement including deliberate will to fund the deal.
The government had originally pledged more than $1.4 million to the peace fund but only deposited $400,000 into the account.
“I urged the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity to avail the necessary resources for the implementation of the peace agreement,” said Charles Tai Gitual, chairperson of Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) meeting in Juba this morning.
Tai called on the parties signatory to the peace to expedite the implementation of the critical tasks.
“9 July this year will mark ten years of independence for South Sudan. It is incumbent on all of us to push hard on the implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement so that the ten years the celebration will mark not only the milestone of a decade of independence, but also significant progress in the implementation of the peace agreement,” he said.
