JUBA – The chairperson of South Sudan National Youth Union, Gola Boyoi Gola, has started a fundraising initiative to help Juba university students who are being locked out of lectures over tuition fees.

Over the past week, Juba university students have been on streets in the capital expressing anger after the university administration decided to prevent those who haven’t paid their tuition fees from attending lectures.

Following the protest, the University administration decided to suspend studies until November 3, to give time for those who haven’t paid their tuition fees.

In a statement to Sudans Post on Tuesday, Boyoi called for well-wishers to help him and his organization collect money that he hopes will help those being locked out of lectures because of failure to pay annual fees.

“As you’re all aware that some students at the university of Juba are at the risk of being deregistered if they don’t pay their tuition fees up to 23rd November, as per the circular [by the University Administration, the leadership of South Sudan National Youth Union is spearheading a fundraising campaign for those students who can’t afford paying their tuition,” Boyoi said.

“We are requesting whoever interested in supporting this great cause to kindly send his or her WhatsApp number to +211 923 222 224 so that he/she is added into WhatsApp group and gets more details,” he added.

Boyoi further said the “Union is working with the Dean of the students’ affairs at the University of Juba to identify the number of the students who can’t afford to pay their tuition fees. Hence, the names of the students to be supported will be posted on the WhatsApp group before donation commences.”

He said the process will be “transparent and equitable. No favoritism or money laundering.”
