AWEIL – A serial killer stabbed two men to death and critically injured another in Aweil Centre county of South Sudan’s Northern Bahr el Ghazal state on Wednesday, officials said.

Speaking to Sudans Post on Friday, Aweil Centre County Police Commission Peter Natale said the motive for the attack, which occurred in Bar-mayen, remains unclear.

“The report we have received is that a suspect has stabbed with a knife three men. One died on spot, another passed on after reaching the Aweil Civil hospital. The other is still critically suffering from injuries after sustaining knife wounds,” he said.

Natale said the suspect remained at large but authorities were working to apprehend them.

“We have tipped or informed the law enforcement agencies such as the MI, the police, the CID, and security service men and the neighboring communities to bring the culprit to book,” Natale said.

The commissioner urged relatives to remain calm while the search continued.

The deceased were identified as Uguak Ungom Uguak, 60, and Lual Dhel, 35. The injured man, Garang Mawut, was in stable condition, according to Deng Piol, the director of Aweil hospital.

“The other victim is responding well. He can answer questions from doctors as he was not crying a lot on the first day… but he is self-aware of what is around him now,” Piol said.

Piol said some of Mawut’s intestines were exposed before he reached the hospital.

Knife attacks have become more frequent in the state. Last week, a young man was allegedly killed by a gang and dumped on the Kuom highway leading to Wau.

It is unclear what is driving the violence, although some attribute it to worsening economic conditions.
