JUBA – At least 12 people were killed and several others wounded in airstrikes on Nasir and Longechuk counties in Upper Nile State late Sunday, witnesses said, with fears the casualty count could rise.

The airstrikes, which began around 11:20 p.m. local time in Nasir and continued into Longechuk around midnight, involved aircraft whose identity remained disputed by eyewitnesses.

Locals reported seeing aircraft dropping what they described as barrel bombs, with some believing them to be Antonov planes, while others suggested they resembled drones.

“What I saw looks like an Antonov because it dropped the barrels from a longer distance above the land,” a witness, who declined to be named for security reasons, told Sudans Post on Monday morning. “However, others are saying it looked more like a drone.”

Witnesses reported two barrel bombs were dropped on Nasir, one striking the airstrip and the other the Nasir market. The precise identity of the aircraft was not immediately confirmed by official sources.

The South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) could not be immediately reached for comment, and details on the number of wounded remained unclear.
