JUBA — South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit has told visiting Sudanese Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok that the world’s youngest country cannot afford another conflict which he said is unfolding between rival SPLA-IO forces.

Hamdok on Thursday arrived in Juba for a 2-day stage visit in which he is expected to hold talks on South Sudan peace process, SPLM-IO split, and bilateral relations between the two countries.

In a statement following a meeting between Kiir and Hamdok, the presidency said President Kiir has appealed to Hamdok to speak with Machar’s SPLM-IO in order to resolve their differences to avoid returning the country to another conflict that he said won’t be afforded.

“His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit urged Dr Abdallah Hamdok as a peace guarantor to urge the holdout groups to respect cessation of hostilities as a matter of urgency,” the statement said.

“President Salva Kiir Mayardit also urged Dr Abdalllah Hamdok to ask the SPLM_IO to resolve their differences peacefully, stressing that South Sudan cannot afford another confrontation,” he stressed.

On bilateral relations with Sudan, Kiir, according to the presidency statement, “reiterated the commitment of South Sudan Government to work together with Sudan’s Government to strengthen the ties and bilateral cooperation of the two Countries in line with the 2012 Cooperation Agreement on the areas of security arrangements along the borders, cooperation in Central Bank and the related issues, Agreement on economic matters and oil, trade as well as payment of post service benefits.”

For his part, Hamdok “commended H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit for his commitment towards the ongoing implementation of the Revitalised Peace Agreement  as well as the progress made in the Sudanese peace process.”

He also “emphasized on the need to establish strong bilateral relations between the two Countries in the areas of trade, Health, education, security among other areas fo move the two Countries forward.”
