South Sudan court rejects live broadcast bid in high-profile Machar trial

JUBA — A special court in South Sudan on Monday rejected a request to allow live broadcasting of proceedings in the trial of suspended First Vice President Riek Machar, ruling that hearings will continue without real-time media coverage.

Machar, a key opposition figure and former rebel leader, is among eight accused in the case, which has drawn significant political and public attention.

The case, one of the most closely watched trials in the country in recent years, has also attracted sustained interest from local and international media. Journalists and media organizations have previously sought greater access to proceedings, including expanded courtroom coverage and transparency measures, but such requests have been limited, with authorities maintaining tight control over information flow.

Presiding judge Stephen Simon Issac said the court had already prohibited live broadcasts and would not reverse its earlier decision, citing the need to protect the integrity of the judicial process, ensure the safety of witnesses, and prevent potential interference with evidence.

The request had been submitted last week by defense lawyer Kur Lual Kur, who also asked the court to adjourn proceedings for one week to allow time to prepare the accused for judicial questioning.

The court dismissed both applications.

Judge James Alala Deng adjourned the session to May 4, when the court is expected to begin questioning the accused. The trial, now in its 72nd session, is being held at Freedom Hall in Juba.

The prosecution team includes Counsel General Deng Achuil Adija, Sabri Wani Lado, Serafino Simon Mizan, and Filberto Mayuot Mareng, supported by a broader group of advocates and legal officers.

The defense is led by a six-member team comprising Geri Raimondu Lege, Kur Lual Kur, Anis Tombe Augustino, Deng John Deng, Warnyang Kiir Warnyang, and Regina Akeriaw Deng.

Investigations in the case are led by Major General Basile Thomas Wani, assisted by Brigadier General John Dak, while Captain Richard Gachi Apollo of the Internal Security Service is listed as the complainant.

The accused include Riek Machar Teny, 73; Puot Kang Chuol, 40; Mam Pal Dhuor, 37; Gatwech Lam Puoch, 66; Lt. Gen. Gabriel Duop Lam, 53; Camilo Gatmai Kel, 47; Mading Yak Riek, 45; and Dominic Gatgok Riek, 27.
