Ambassador Dr. Mohammed Ali Guyo, Deputy Chief Mediator of the Tumaini Peace Initiative, confirmed the mediation process had entered the consultation phase.
“We have received the government delegation, the process has already kicked off and we continue with consultation until Monday, then Tuesday, then we shall have an official opening, official ceremony on Wednesday,” Mohammed told U.N. Radio Miraya.
The talks will officially resume on Wednesday, December 4.
“Remember that the official opening is just a ceremony, the icing on the cake. Substantive issues are now being discussed at the consultation levels and therefore there is a lot of hope,” he said.
Mohammed expressed optimism about progress, noting positive engagement with the government delegation.
“We engaged the government, we are happy with what we have received so far from the government. I will not divulge much of the issues that we discussed, but remember that this consultation is what will eventually give success to the entire process,” he said.
The talks, scheduled to last two weeks, follow directives from South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit and Kenyan President William Ruto.
“We will also remind the parties and their stakeholders that the summit between President Salva and President William Ruto has already given us a roadmap,” he said.
“The communique is clear, we will distribute the communique for the parties to see for themselves and for the stakeholders and even for yourself, so that we are familiar with number one, the two weeks deadline proposed by the two presidents.”
He emphasized that discussions will focus on the nine protocols signed in July and stressed the need for future mediations to take place within South Sudan.
“And above all, this should be the last mediation that should be conducted outside South Sudan,” Mohammed added.
