JUBA — South Sudan government on Sunday evening issued a statement welcoming the signing of the political agreement signed by the country’s head of transitional governing council Gen. Abdelfattah Al Burhan and Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok.
Earlier in the day, Hamdok who was just released few hours earlier, and Burhan signed a deal in Khartoum.
The agreement provides for the return of Hamdok to his position which was snatched by the military when it seized power one month ago.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of South Sudan would like to convey the congratulations of H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit to the leaders of the Republic of Sudan for their leadership and courage to forge a way out of the current political situation in Sudan,” South Sudan’s foreign ministry said in a statement extended to Sudans Post.
“The agreement that was today signed between H.E. Gen. Abdel Fatah Al Burhan, Chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereign Council, and H.E. Abdulla Hamdok, Sudan’s Prime Minister is a significance landmark achievement that proudly displays the will and determination to return the country to the path of peace,” the statement added.
The statement further said Kiir “once again reiterates his government’s readiness to assist the Sudanese leaders and people as they now implement the agreement.”
