South Sudan parliamentary session disrupted after power supply generator malfunctioned

JUBA – South Sudan’s transitional national legislative assembly abruptly adjourned its Monday session after the main power supply generator malfunctioned, disrupting critical technology and raising concerns about the standby unit’s reliability.

The parliament was scheduled to receive a joint committee report on the National Bureau of Statistics Bill 2024 for its third reading.

“We have a lot of inconvenience this morning,” said First Deputy Speaker Oyet Nathaniel, who chaired the session. “As you can see, our technology is down. The ICT is not functioning. It’s because of the power supply. Our main generator is down.”

Nathaniel noted the discomfort caused by the heat and the uncertainty surrounding the backup generator’s ability to continue powering the chamber.

“So, any time the power may go, and it will be black in the room,” he explained. “So, in view of that, I have the single honor to adjourn the sitting.”

The adjournment highlights potential infrastructure challenges faced by South Sudan’s transitional government institutions.
