JUBA – South Sudan Patriotic Movement (SSPM) is urging other signatories to the revitalized peace agreement to forget pass differences and bring permanent peace to the suffering people of South Sudan, appealing to the citizens to also participate effectively in realizing pre-independence aspirations.

The group which is led by Dr. Costello Garang Lual – South Sudan’s presidential advisor on presidency affairs – made the call in a statement extended to Sudans Post this morning in which it also said that building of peace and permanent stability in the world’s youngest nation needs collective efforts.

“The South Sudan Patriotic Movement (SSPM) extends its heartfelt congratulations to the people of South Sudan on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the glorious independence of our country which we won after long and hard struggles in which our precious people offered a price for their freedom and dignity among the free peoples of the world,” the statement signed by the group’s spokesman Stephen Lual Ngor, reads in part.

“The tenth anniversary of our country’s independence is passing and our country is going through a phase of remarkable political and security stability. It requires all of us to join efforts to achieve the legitimate aspirations and dreams of our people for independence, by working wholeheartedly to implement the terms of the revitalized peace agreement, which will be the main entrance to the return of stability,” the statement added.

The SSPM is a signatory to the revitalized peace agreement signed by President Salva Kiir Mayardit and a number of opposition groups. It is a member of the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) and Hussein Abdelbaggi, a senior member of the SSPM, is the vice-president for services cluster, representing the SSOA.

“We, in the South Sudan Patriotic Movement (SSPM), hope that the tenth anniversary of independence will be an occasion to stand with oneself and review our experience in the light of the history of the common struggle of our people, and that all political parties in the country, in all colors of their spectrum, strive to overcome past differences and internal divisions and work to stop the suffering of our people and appeal to the voice of Reason, peace is our only way to return our country to the platform of foundation and then launch it towards broader horizons,” the statement further added.
