South Sudan police officer with 3 nationalities on the run after stealing over $7 million

In a letter dated July 16 and addressed to the ministry of foreign affairs and international cooperation, General Majak Akec, the Inspector General of South Sudan police, urged the ministry to extradite Taban Idro Kuei who is wanted on the misappropriation of funds and is believed to be in DR Congo.

JUBA – A South Sudanese police officer who also holds the Ugandan and Congolese nationalities is wanted by authorities in Juba for misappropriating at least $7 million before fleeing the country, according to the inspector general of police.

In a letter dated July 16 and addressed to the ministry of foreign affairs and international cooperation, General Majak Akec, the Inspector General of South Sudan police, urged the ministry to extradite Taban Idro Kuei who is wanted on the misappropriation of funds and is believed to be in DR Congo.

“Reference to the above subject, Mr. Taban Idro Kuei is South Sudanese national wanted in criminal case No. 3282/2021 charged under sections 346 of South Sudan Penal Code Act 2008 at Northern Police Division-Juba on 23/06/2021 for offence of criminal misappropriation in which misappropriated sum of USD 7,721.150,” General Majok wrote in the letter.

The senior police officer further said the suspect who also holds Ugandan and Congolese nationalities “is believed to have crossed the border from Uganda to DR Congo last week.”

“Therefore, the office of IGP, South Sudan National Police Service is requesting you to forward this request to DR Congo through Diplomatic channels to facilitate the arrest of the suspect and repatriate him back to South Sudan for prosecution.”
