JUBA – President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Sunday called for increased trade among East African Community member states.
Speaking during the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of Ugandan Independence in Kampala on Sunday, Kiir said intra-regional trade and cooperation is the only best way to promote economic prosperity in East Africa.
“It is only through strengthening inter-regional trade and cooperation within our borders that we as Africa can achieve our objective of economic prosperity in East Africa, and across the continent,” said Kiir.
Kiir said engaging in inter-regional trade will uplift the people from poverty.
“As African leaders, this will uplift our people out of the abject poverty, chronic illness, and ignorance,” Kiir said.
He called on regional leaders to work together to address the challenges facing their people and build a better future for the next generations.
“Guided by our common values and interests to effectively determine our shared destiny, we must strive to build a better future for the next generations and collectively overcome the patronizing foreign control of our affairs. “
He urged his counterparts within the East African Community to join hands and work together for the common good of all Africans.
