JUBA – South Sudan is to set up a one-stop shop for foreign investors, an official said.
Speaking during an investment promotion conference on Tuesday, the Minister of Investment Dhieu Mathok Diing Wol said the move will boost registration of foreign investors.
“We have developed a concept that needs to be shared with the investment promotion agencies such that we agree on the model best for South Sudan,” he explained.
Mathok said the ministry is still validating reports on existing investment opportunities.
“We are passing through very serious economic situation and we are now trying also to underline some of the challenges we are facing in the ministry of investment such that we can be able to have investment environment which is attractive to everyone,” he stated.
Citing insecurity as detrimental to investments, the minister revealed that the government is working to improve security and procedures which are attractive to foreign investors.
“We want to simplify the procedures to investors such that they can be able to come to South Sudan with their capital, we have a lot of investors visiting South Sudan but they do not invest because of the challenges including insecurity,” he stressed.
The Vice President and chairman of the Economic Cluster, James Wani Igga said proliferation of arms in the hands of unauthorized people is the major cause of insecurity.
“The internal security has become a big challenge in recent times, internal conflict including ethnic and economic upheavals have had debilitating effects on the economy, most notably by scaring investors from certain parts of our country,” he remarked.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Deputy Country Representative, Titus Osundina said the 2013 civil war affected the growth of South Sudan’s economy.
“To promote inclusive economic growth and harness the full potential of private sector contribution, identify investment opportunities and using One-stop shop as a facilitating vehicle for private and public investment is very essential,” he explained.
