South Sudan descended into a bloody civil war in December 2013. Since 2015, the government has not been able to organize annual independence celebrations owing to economic constraints as revenues were since directed towards the civil war.
Speaking to Sudans Post in an exclusive interview this afternoon, Dr. Barnaba Marial said he has been tasked by President Salva Kiir Mayardit to organize celebrations for the 10th independence anniversary which he said will take place both at the national and state levels.
“The good news is that our country is going to celebrate this anniversary of independence at both national and state levels. This is a sign of improvement for our economy because we haven’t been able to do that in many years,” Marial said.
“I have been tasked by His Excellency the President of the Republic of South Sudan to oversee the celebration and now I am working on it,” he added.
The South Sudanese conflict began when internal power struggle between President Salva Kiir Mayardit and Dr. Riek Machar Teny sparked fighting within the SPLA, the ten national army of the country which gained independence two years earlier.
According to international humanitarian agencies and watchdogs, the conflict which has largely been fought along ethnic lines between supporters of President Kiir and his deputy Dr. Riek Machar Teny has killed almost 400,000 people.
Kiir and Machar signed a revitalized version of a 2015 peace agreement in 2018 and Machar who once served for few months in 2016 as First Vice President has been reinstated to the position based on the revitalized peace agreement.
