JUBA – South Sudan’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has announced plans to release the results of the 2021 Population Estimation Survey (PES) across which was conducted across the country’s 10 states and three administrative areas.
The Director General of the NBS, Augustino Ting Mayai, announced this during a press conference in Juba on Wednesday. He said the survey’s thematic report and policy brief cover the economy, labor, disability, education, health, and agriculture.
“The current population estimation survey thematic report and policy brief covers the economy, labor, disability, education, health and agriculture. In phase one, September 16 to September 20, 2024, the key findings will be presented in seven States,” Mayai said.
In the first phase, scheduled from September 16 to 20, 2024, the key findings will be presented in seven states: Northern Bahr El Ghazel, Western Bahr El Ghazel, Lakes, Jonglei, Western Equatoria, Warrap, and Eastern Equatoria.
Mayai noted that in the second phase, the report and policy brief will be disseminated in the remaining three states and three administrative areas.
The population estimation survey covers population size, structure, distribution, housing and household characteristics, education and literacy, and reproductive health.
Mayai said the 2008 Census estimated South Sudan’s population at 8.2 million, with males constituting approximately 52 percent. However, the 2021 PES put the population at 12.4 million, with 52 percent female.
He added that conflict and insecurity have hindered large-scale data collection in the country, leading to significant uncertainty about the current population estimate due to the scarcity of quality population data.
