JUBA – South Sudan government issued a warning on Monday to traders against importing electronic waste into the country.

Dr. Lado Wani Kenyi, undersecretary of the Ministry of Information Communication Technology and Postal Services (ICT&PS) telecom sector, highlighted the environmental and health threats posed by imported electronic equipment.

“We would like to warn traders against the importation of used electronic equipment to the country. The donated and used electronic gadgets contribute massively to the electronic waste in South Sudan,” Wani said.

He made these remarks during the start of an e-waste management workshop organized by the National Communication Authority in collaboration with the East Africa Communication Organization in Juba.

Joseph Africano Bartel, Undersecretary for Environment and Forestry, emphasized that the country has developed pollution management strategies.

“The workshop would create an enabling strategy for the country to develop its management plan for e-waste,” Africano said.

The three-day forum brings together delegates from the Ministry of ICT&PS, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, telecom operators, EACO members, and other relevant authorities.
