JUBA – A high-level delegation from South Sudan’s Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation arrived on Friday evening in the Egyptian capital Cairo to take part, on behalf of the government of South Sudan, in the Cairo Water Week conference slated for October 16th.

Egypt is set to launch on Sunday the fifth edition of Cairo Water Week (CWW), the annual event that aims to spread awareness on water issues and promote innovation to face the most pressing water-related challenges.

The four-day gathering, according to the Egyptian government, is organized by the Egyptian Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources in cooperation with partners from regional and international organizations, as well as national institutions, authorities and ministries.

Speaking to Sudans Post in Cairo this evening, Gattiek Gatkuoth Wichar, the spokesman of the ministry of water resources and irrigation, said the delegation arrived on Friday in the Egyptian capital and will take part on behalf of the government in the Cairo Water Week.

“Yesterday evening a government delegation from Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation left Juba for Egyptian capital Cairo upon the invitation from the government of Arab Republic of Egypt in order to represent the Republic of South Sudan in the fifth edition of ‘Cairo Water Week,’” Gatkuoth said.

“This conference is held annually under the auspices of the government of the Arab Republic of Egypt to address issues to do with climate change on water resources, water quality, hydrology, crop productivity, water governance, policy planning as well as availing water for food security,” he added.

The senior water ministry official said the delegation is already in the Egyptian capital and is led by Eng. Thomas Jang, the Director-General of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, and will return to South Sudan at the end of the conference.

“Now the delegation is already here and is led by Eng. Thomas Jang, the Director-General for Water Resources Management of the ministry, the Director-General for Irrigation and Drainage Eng. Makuach Ador Deng as well as other senior staff,” he added.
