JUBA – South Sudan Council of Churches Women’s Programme called on the unity government to take steps to restore peace, security and end all forms of bloodshed in the country.
The church women made this call during a one-day women conference held in Juba on Saturday.
The conference was a prelude to the South Sudan Great Gospel Crusade slated for December at Dr. John Garang Mausoleum in Juba.
Rev. Awatif Ali Abdrhman, Chairperson for Women Programme called on women to unite and raise their voices for peace and unity to prevail in South Sudan.
“Our voices and calls as women of South Sudan and as church women; we want people in this country. We want peace and help from our leaders to stand in search for peace,” Ali told reporters in Juba on Saturday.
Ali called for an end to bloodshed and human suffering in South Sudan.
“We are saying enough is enough, no more war, looting or stealing, killing and other bad things that are happening in our country,” she said.
She urged the believers to join hands with church in search for peace in a bid to move the country toward prosperity
“Lets us encourage and support each other. Let us always be number one and not least because we are the bearers of children, we give birth to presidents, bishops, engineers and doctors and if we are not strong will not be able to give birth to strong children,” she said.
In February this year, South Sudan Council of Churches and members of Civil Society reported in a joint press statement that South Sudan continues to witness devastating inter-communal violence, displacement of civilians, sexual and gender-based violence.
It said men in uniform set up unnecessary roadblocks for extorting money and inflicting pain on travelers and humanitarian workers, alongside an economy that falters with soaring inflation rates.
