JUBA, MARCH 23, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – The Japanese government announced on Thursday afternoon that it is contributing at least 1.17 million U.S. dollars as aid package for South Sudan peace monitoring mechanisms.

Tsutsumi Naohiro, Japanese Ambassador to South Sudan said the aid will help reduce the acute budget deficit that the CTSAMVM and RJMEC are currently facing.

“It will also be utilized for contributing to the implementation of the peace agreement, in particular, with USD 1.17 allocated to South Sudan’s peace monitoring meachanism such as CTSAMVM, RJMEC and IGAD within the assistance package,” Naohiro said in a statement extended to Sudans Post on Thursday.

On July 15, 2022, the US cut off its financial support for RJMEC and CTSAMVM, the country’s peace mechanism due to a lack of progress on implementing the 2018 peace pact.

Fund shortage faced the national ceasefire monitors serving with the CTSAMVM to lay down their tools early this month due to the non-payment of 10 months allowances.

On his part, Lt. Gen. Asrat Denero Amad, the Chairperson for CTSAMVM expressed his gratitude to the Japanese government for the unwavering support rendered to ceasefire monitors.

“We at CTSAMVM are delighted that we continue having your financial support even at this critical period of the peace process,” said Asrat.

Gen. Asrat hopes that Japan will continue supporting the mechanism in order to continue its operations during the implementation of its mandate in South Sudan.
