JUBA — South Sudan’s ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM-IG) has ordered its cadres to return to their constituencies as the party begins preparations for its Third National Convention and the December 2026 general elections.

SPLM Secretary General Akol Paul Kordit said senior party committees are being sent to several states and administrative areas to oversee preparations for the convention and internal primaries.

“This is a meeting of SPLM high level committees that will be going to the states of Upper Nile, Unity State, Jonglei State, Greater Pibor Administrative Area and Ruweng Administrative Area,” he said during a press conference on Thursday.

According to Kordit, the teams will supervise party activities at the grassroots, including primaries in the states and administrative areas.

“These teams are heading there to supervise the process of preparation for the SPLM Third National Convention. In this process also, primaries shall be conducted in all the states.”

With the country heading towards elections in December, Kordit urged SPLM members and leaders to leave Juba and return to their constituencies.

“As we are all aware that we are going for general election in December this year. The SPLM therefore call upon all its cadres to begin to report to their constituencies, to their respective states and administrative areas and all the way to the grassroots.”

Kordit said the September 22 decision to dissolve the transitional government has, in the SPLM’s view, shifted political responsibility back to voters.

“Because with the decision of the government on 22nd of September, the political power returned back to the people of South Sudan.”

He said political leaders cannot continue to hold positions without the support of the people they seek to serve.

“And there is no way you can be honourable again, have that title without being honoured by the very people you intend to serve.”

Kordit said the SPLM’s goal is to ensure that voters choose their leaders and that those leaders remain accountable to the people.

“This is our mission in the SPLM, to see to it that people of South Sudan elect their leaders, to have leaders that are accountable to them.”

He specifically called on SPLM cadres, members and leaders from Upper Nile, Unity and Jonglei states, as well as Greater Pibor and Ruweng Administrative Areas, to return to their constituencies.

“Make a specific appeal to our cadres, members, leaders from the following states, Upper Nile State, Unity State, Jonglei State, Greater Pibor Administrative Area, Ruweng Administrative Area, to begin to move to their respective constituencies so that they participate in the primaries and congresses leading to the Third National Convention and the conduct of the general election in December 2026.”

The mobilisation comes as the SPLM prepares for a major internal political exercise ahead of the planned national elections, with party primaries expected to shape the candidates who will compete at constituency and other levels.
