In a strongly worded statement released on April 5, the Speaker’s office said it stands by the constitution and the country’s peace deal, under President Salva Kiir Mayardit.
The response follows an SPLM parliamentary caucus meeting on March 31, where some MPs presented a petition raising concerns about the Speaker.
But in a surprising twist, the Speaker’s office says the process was unfair.
Only three MPs were allowed to speak — all defending the petition.
“The Speaker was not given a chance to respond,” the statement said.
Despite the dispute, the Speaker’s office says it is ready to address any concerns through “appropriate institutional channels.”
“The Rt. Hon. Speaker will continue to discharge her constitutional duties and responsibilities with impartiality and dedication in service of the people,” the statement said.
The office also urged political actors to remain focused on national priorities, warning that the country is at a critical stage of its transition.
It emphasised the need for unity, stability, and collective responsibility to ensure the successful implementation of the peace agreement and a path towards general elections.
The development highlights growing internal pressures within the ruling party, at a time when South Sudan is preparing for key milestones in its transition to democratic governance.
