General Dual was appointed on the ticket of the main armed opposition SPLA-IO yesterday as presidential advisor for peace. Opposition leader Dr. Costello Garang Ring Lual was also appointed as a presidential advisor on presidency affairs.
Speaking to Sudans Post this morning, an aide of General Gatwech who requested not to be named said the top opposition commander was informed by Machar two months ago about him being considered for appointment as a presidential advisor, but had turned down the offer over the delay in the implementation of the security arrangements.
“This is unacceptable appointment,” the aide who requested not to be named said. “How do you appoint someone without his consent? In fact Dr. Riek two or three months ago offered to appoint General Gatwech to a senior government position but the chief did told him that it was not necessary for now before the security arrangement is completed.”
The opposition military chief’s aide said the appointment was “an attempt by the regime and those in Juba to divert the focus of the SPLA-IO general headquarters on the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement but this won’t work.”
“We are not after positions, but after a genuine implementation of the revitalized peace agreement and that is why this appointment doesn’t work,” the aide added.
