JUBA — South Sudan’s main armed opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO) has this evening recaptured its base at Jekou which was captured by South Sudan People’s Defense Forces two days ago, senior SPLA-IO general said.

Speaking to Sudans Post from Jekou, the senior SPLA-IO commander who requested not to be identified by name said the SPLA-IO forces have retaken the town after South Sudan’s army launched surprise attack on the group’s positions in both Upper Nile and Unity state.

“This is to confirm that the attack which resulted in the capture of our cantonment site has now been defeated and we are back in our position,” the senior opposition military commander said on phone from Jekou.

He revealed however that fighting has continued to take place in other places in Maiwut and Longechuk and urged the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces command in Juba to intervene so that it forces do not ‘killed’ the revitalized agreement.

“Now as I am speaking with you, fighting is taking place in several areas not only in Maiwut, but in Longechuk County and all these attacks are not provoked. We were just surprised by the attack from our peace partners,” he said.

“My message to the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces leadership is that don’t spoil the spirit of peace we have constructed over the last three years. You need to intervene so that your soldiers here do not kill the peace agreement,” he added.
