RUMBEK – The chairperson of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-In Opposition (SPLM-IO) in Lakes State has denied that the party has collapsed after members defected to the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM).
Dr. Isaiah Akhol Mathiang dismissed allegations raised by former SPLM-IO members, including Poth Madit Dut, who cited a lack of agenda, democratic principles, and opposition to the 2024 elections as reasons for leaving.
Mathiang asserted that the “SPLM-IO represents all South Sudanese, not just the Nuer tribe.”
He emphasized the party’s focus on a permanent constitution, refugee repatriation, voter registration, army unification, and free and fair elections.
He argued that SPLM-IO’s unreadiness for the 2024 elections “is intended to benefit the people of South Sudan” and questioned the criticism of its democratic principles, given the past election of Poth Madit Dut as Deputy Governor.
Mathiang countered claims that the SPLM-IO lacks a reform agenda, highlighting the rise of young men and women within the party.
“The leadership of SPLM-IO in Lakes State, despite numerous defected members, remains committed to disseminating SPLM-IO ideology to the people of Lakes State and South Sudan as well,” Mathiang said.
He expressed confidence in the vision of SPLM-IO leader Riek Machar and called for “unity in fighting corruption, nepotism, tribalism, and promoting good governance.”
Mathiang affirmed the SPLM-IO’s continued presence in Lakes State despite the recent defections.
