JUBA – South Sudan’s main armed opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) has established its party secretariat in Cueibet County of Lakes state, days after the party launched a nation-wide registration drive in Juba.

Isaiah Akol Alfred, the SPLM-IO-nominated Commissioner of Cueibet County, says the opening of the opposition secretariat in the state affirms the Machar-led group’s commitment to peace and does not want to return to conflict.

“This is a remarkable step by the people of Cueibet County of indeed the members of the SPLM-IO under the leadership of H.E Dr. Riek Machar Teny, the chairman and commander in chief of the SPLM-IO and the First Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan,” he said.

“This opening of the party secretariat affirms the SPLM-IO commitment to peace and to its vision of transitioning from war to peace and we are committed to the implementation of the agreement that’s why we opened our office here in Cueibet County,” he added.

The main armed opposition group on July 2 launched a nationwide drive at its general secretariat in Juba ahead of a would-be election slated for end of the transitional period in 2023.
