JUBA – South Sudan’s main armed opposition group, Sudan People Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO), led by the country’s First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny on Tuesday launched the registration of party members in Bor town, Jonglei State.

Speaking to Sudans Post in an interview on Wednesday, Michael Bol, Secretary-General of SPLM-IO in Jonglei State said the move will enable its members to participate in party affairs and governance.

“We wish all our members to come and get registered because this will enable them to participate fully as members of the SPLM-IO,” Mr. Bol told Sudans Post reporter in Juba.

Mr. Bol disclosed that they have so far registered more than 40 members in the ongoing registration campaign launched yesterday by Amer Ateny Alier, state Chairperson of SPLM-IO in Jonglei state.

“We have reached 40 members and the members are still coming up to now, I just left the secretarial, people are coming slowing and after the registration, the members are given membership cards,” said Bol.

He urged party supporters to register their membership in preparation for the upcoming registration of political parties.

“It is very important for us to register our members for us to determine the number of the members we have in the state to enable us to register our political party.”

He disclosed that the party issued the new membership card after registration.

“We want to transform our party to be a political party which will be very active in South Sudan democratically,” he said.

Last month, SPLM-IO opened its party’s secretariat in Jonglei State.

The event was presided over by the party’s Interim Secretary General, Regina Joseph, under the theme “Towards a Democratic, United and Prosperous South Sudan,” in Bor town.
