JUBA, JANUARY 19TH 2023 (SUDANS POST) – The secretary-general of South Sudan’s main armed opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) Regina Kaba was on Monday afternoon flown to the Kenyan capital Nairobi where she received surgery, a senior official close to First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar and the leader of the group said.

The official who requested not to be named for having not been authorized to speak to the media said the SPLM-IO chief administrator fall sick immediately following her visit to Warrap State last week where the SPLM-IO inaugurated its state secretariat and has been suffering from undisclosed illness for a while.

“Yes, the secretary-general Hon. Regina Joseph has been taken to Nairobi. She received a surgery on Tuesday afternoon and she is currently recovering well. This is what I was told by those who accompanied her to Kenya  and she fall sick after she traveled to Warrap State when we opened the movement’s secretariat there,” the official said.

“I have understood that she has been suffering from a certain sickness that need operation. She didn’t had time to travel abroad for treatment given the huge task as the chief administrator of the SPLM-IO and the chairman who didn’t know that she was suffering was very sad for her situation because personal health is very important,” he added.

He further said that the top SPLM-IO official is “no responding to medication” after undergoing surgery on Tuesday.

In an email to Sudans Post this morning separately, a senior opposition official who also requested not to be named said that Joseph was suffering from an ‘intestinal’ condition which he said is expected to go away following the surgery.
