JUBA, JUNE 11, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – The youth wing of the main armed opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) led by First Vice President Riek Machar has elected a new deputy chair and secretary-general.
In a statement on Saturday, Goanar Gordon Yien – acting spokesman of the SPLM-IO chairman – said the election was conducted in a special event chaired by Machar, SPLM-IO Secretary-General Regina Kaba, oil minister and former SPLM-IO Youth League chairperson Puot Kang Chol with representatives from the 10 states and 3 administrative areas.
“The aim of the meeting was to elect two members into the positions of Deputy Chairperson and Secretary General of the Youth League respectively,” the statement said.
“The categories that voted in the election were delegates and members of the party from the (10) States and the (3) Administrative Areas,” the statement added.
The statement said that Awal Majok Riak won the election by 83 votes from an initial number of 96 to become the deputy chairperson, while Daniel Yohanis Magok was elected by 50 votes to become the secretary-general.
“The election was conducted in a transparent and democratic environment as these are the core values and objectives for which SPLM-IO was founded,” the SPLM-IO statement dated June 10, 2023, further said, adding that the group “observed gender, regional representation, and national diversity” in the process.
In statements following the vote, First Vice President Machar said he “wishes good luck to those who did not make it and congratulates the newly elected Cadres; Cde. Awal Majok, and Cde. Daniel Yohannes to the Leadership of Youth League.”
