RUMBEK – South Sudan’s ruling party (SPLM) is ready for this year’s elections scheduled for December, the party’s youth chairperson in Unity State declared.
Deng Muon Liah Sudan said elections will reduce the huge size of government.
“The main reasons why we are ready for the election [is that] we are tired of the huge government. Even citizens are tired of the huge government which does not provide services to the entire citizens”, he told Sudan’s Post in an interview.
Muon, also a member of the state legislative assembly, welcomed other political parties’ participation in the elections already marred by delays in preparations.
“We cannot mind about others political parties’ readiness. Those who will refuse to participate in the upcoming election will remain in the ways they wanted and we will continue with general elections. We first started with our Sudan people Liberation Movement SPLM political rallies and it will be followed by the endorsement of the chairman of the SPLM party, Salva Kiir Mayardit,” he stressed.
The youth leader expressed concerns over the country’s decision to maintain five vice presidents and over 500 members of the national legislative assembly.
“The upcoming general election will reduce five vices President and will also reduce this huge legislative assembly with more than 500 members”, he stated.
Meanwhile the armed opposition (SPLM-IO) Secretary General in Unity State, William Gai Riak Machar said they are focusing on implementing the remaining tasks of the revitalized peace deal.
“The December 2024 general election can only be safe when we have one national army but those who said elections before reunification of armies are talking different things, not election,” said Riak.
He said the general elections will only be free if conducted under a unified army.
