JUBA — The South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) has been given the position of chief whip in the parliament, a parliament official said.
John Agany Deng, Chairperson of Information Committee in the Revitalized Transitional National Legislative Assembly, revealed this following a parliamentary sitting in Juba on Tuesday.
This comes after principles agreed to create a chief whip position for SSOA.
Deng said the new position has been incorporated into the conduct of business regulations, 2021 as amended.
The conduct of business regulations was presented to the parliament on Tuesday by Deputy Chairperson for the committee on Legislation and Justice, Hon. George Andrea Juma.
Deng said the parliament now have got three chief whips in the assembly.
“The question of chief whip has also been addressed in the conduct of business as per the agreement. The agreement talks of the main two chief whips, the government chief whip, and opposition chief whip,” Deng said.
“The other parties to the agreement were supposed to have the whips but in fact, South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) raised the concern to principles and all of them agreed that SSOA should be given chief whip position,” he said.
“With that amendment, it is inclusive with SSOA having chief whip. So we are now having three chief whips, the government chief whip, the opposition (SPLM-IO) chief whip, and then SSOA chief whip,” he added.
