JUBA — South Sudan army on Thursday denied that the commander of its fourth infantry division, Maj. Gen. Kerbino Ruai Tap, and his military intelligence chief Brig. Gen. Kugar Yar, have been arrested.

On Tuesday, security sources at Bilpam and Bentiu said that the two army commanders were arrested and flown to Juba after the army accused them of negligence following the indiscriminate  killing of Mayom County commissioner.

In a statement this afternoon, Maj. Gen. Lul Ruai Koang said the reports that the army commanders are arrested is untrue and that they are in Juba for official working visit.

“Allegations that Maj. Gen. Keribeno Ruai Tap, Commander of 4th Infantry Division, Brig. Gen. Kugar Yar, Military Intelligence Chief and Brig. Gen. Chabak Machiek Gatpan, Commander of 11th, Infantry Brigade were arrested in Mayor and flown to Juba is un true,” Lul said in a statement.

“To the contrary, they came to Juba to submit situational report and for further consultations with the command,” he added.

Rebels loyal to South Sudan People’s Movement/Army (SSPM/A) led by Gen. Stephen Buay Rolnyang attacked Mayom overnight last Friday killing the commissioner Maj. Gen. Chuol Gatluak Manimeh.

Fighting has since escalated and an army convoy carrying military supplies was ambushed by the rebel group killing at least 40 government soldiers, according to Gen. Buay’s group.
