In a statement seen by Sudans Post, the network said the attack directly targeted the hospital while medical teams were performing their humanitarian duty to save lives. It described the strike as “a full-fledged war crime” and “a flagrant violation of international laws protecting medical facilities.”
The group held the RSF fully responsible for the attack and called on the international community and humanitarian organizations to act urgently to halt what it described as ongoing violations against public facilities, hospitals, and civilian homes. It also urged the protection of what remains of El Fasher’s collapsing healthcare system.
“The continued international silence toward these attacks constitutes deliberate complicity with the systematic killing policy targeting civilians inside their homes and doctors and patients inside hospitals,” the statement added.
The assault marks one of the deadliest strikes on a medical facility in the Darfur region since the start of the war between the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in April 2023. The hospital had been one of the few functioning medical centers still providing care to the growing number of war casualties and displaced residents in El Fasher.
Eyewitnesses and local humanitarian workers said the shelling caused severe damage to several hospital wards, including emergency and surgical units, where dozens of wounded civilians were being treated. Many patients were reportedly trapped under debris, while surviving medical staff worked through the chaos to move them to safety.
The attack has further deepened fears for El Fasher’s besieged population. The city has been under RSF siege since mid-2024, leaving residents cut off from food, medicine, and other essential supplies. Continuous clashes and blockades have made humanitarian access nearly impossible, worsening the already dire living conditions.
El Fasher remains the last major city in Darfur still under the control of the SAF, making it a central target of RSF assaults aimed at taking full control of the region. Repeated attacks on infrastructure, residential areas, and now hospitals have pushed the city’s fragile healthcare system to the brink of total collapse.
Humanitarian agencies, including the United Nations, have repeatedly warned of an impending catastrophe in El Fasher. The city’s remaining medical facilities are struggling to function amid shortages of power, equipment, and medical supplies. Aid convoys have been unable to reach the city due to the ongoing fighting, and health workers have become frequent targets of violence.
UN officials and relief organizations have emphasized that hospitals and humanitarian operations must remain protected under international humanitarian law. However, despite multiple warnings and documented violations, attacks on medical facilities have continued across Darfur, particularly in areas witnessing intensified fighting.
The Sudan Doctors’ Network’s statement reflects growing frustration among Sudanese health professionals who have repeatedly called for international intervention to stop the deliberate targeting of medical institutions. They warn that the cumulative impact of these attacks threatens to erase what remains of Darfur’s healthcare system and leave hundreds of thousands without access to treatment.
As the war drags on, civilians in El Fasher face an escalating crisis marked by daily shelling, food insecurity, and collapsing public services. The city’s residents remain trapped under siege conditions, caught between the RSF’s encirclement and the SAF’s defensive positions, with no clear path to safety or humanitarian relief.
