JUBA, MAY 2, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – Sudan’s warring parties on Tuesday afternoon agreed to a seven-day ceasefire mediated by South Sudan, according to the southern neighbor’s ministry of foreign affairs and international cooperation.

The foreign ministry statement a copy of which was opened by Sudans Post said that President Salva Kiir Mayardit had a telephone conversation with head of the military Abdelfattah al Burhan and head of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) Mohamed Hamdan Daglo who both agreed – in principle – to a seven-day truce.

“In telephone conversation with the Sudanese leaders today May 2nd, 2023, H.E President Salva Kiir Mayardit stressed the importance of a longer ceasefire and naming of representatives to peace talks to be held at an agreed venue,” said the foreign ministry statement.

“The two principals, H.E. Gen. Abdel Fatah Al Burhan, the Chairman of the Sovereign Council and Commander in Chief of Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo Leader of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), have agreed in principle for a seven-day truce from May 4th to 11th. They also agreed to name their representatives to the talks,” it added.

The statement said that Kiir has also urged the two parties to name representatives and propose venue for a peace talk that would aim at addressing grievances of the two Sudanese sides.

“While expressing his appreciation to Gen. Al Burhan and Gen. Dagalo for heeding regional and international calls for ceasefire, President Kiir urged them to take advantage of the 7-day truce to name representatives and propose the date for beginning the talks,” the statement said.

“In line with the initiatives of H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit, the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International has also been in contact with his counterparts regionally and internationally,” the statement further added.

It further said that acting foreign minister Deng Dau has “conferred with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Egypt, Uganda, Kenya, Canada, in addition to the British Minister of State in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, dwelling on the issues ceasefire, cessation of hostilities, humanitarian situation and evacuation of Sudanese and foreign nationals.”
