KHARTOUM – The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) is saying that rebel forces led by renegade General Abdel Wahid Nur have attacked a military base in Southern Darfur’s Jebel Marra killing several people.

Abdel Wahid is the leader of Sudan Liberation Movement/Army and is not a party to teh ongoing peace process hosted by the government of South Sudan and which is due to be signed next week.

In a statement, the SAF said: “In light of the cease-fire and the commitment of the armed forces to that, and despite the peace process that has become a reality in the country, forces affiliated with the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA), Abdul Wahid Muhammad Nur, attacked our forces in the Baldong area of Jebel Marra.”

The statement added that the armed forces in teh area responded in self-defense and that what it calls a surprise “attack was repelled and they fled.”

“The armed forces will continue to protect the soil of the homeland, complete peace steps, and confront all those who target the security and safety of the country and its citizens.”
